Intro to the Kentucky Council of the Blind

  • Do you know a senior citizen who is just losing vision because of macular degeneration, diabetes, or glaucoma?
  • Are you a parent of a blind child, or a student, parent, or professional who is blind or visually impaired?
  • Do you want to know more about technology, guide dogs, magnifiers and other products, services, events and tips that can help people with vision loss lead full and independent lives?
  • Are you looking for information on audible pedestrian signals, Social Security, accessible TV and audio description, education and rehabilitation, or other issues affecting people who are blind or visually impaired?

The Kentucky Council of the Blind is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) membership organization. We are not a state agency. We have no paid staff. We are blind, visually impaired, and sighted volunteers who are dedicated to helping others with low vision to lead fuller, more independent lives.

KCB supports issues that touch all blind and visually impaired people. We advocate for quality education for blind children and youth, expanded training and job opportunities for visually impaired adults, improved services for seniors over age 60 who are just losing jtheir vision, and better public transportation for people who cannot drive. We support Medicare coverage of durable equipment needed by people with low vision; paper money that can be identified by touch; talking prescription labels; more audio described movies and TV shows; and more affordable and easier-to-use technology for people who have low vision.

Announcements

Your Focus On Vision Loss

The Kentucky Council of Citizens with Low Vision (KCCLV) is announcing major changes in its in-person low vision group meeting schedule.

Effective immediately, in an effort to better accommodate individuals who are new to low vision, we are moving our group meetings from two Mondays a month to one Saturday a month.

Our new event is called “Your Focus on Low Vision” and it will meet on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at United Crescent Hill Ministries, 150 S. State Street in Louisville. The first event will be on February 24. Each event will feature speakers, hands-on activities, and a light lunch. The program will be posted in advance on the kcb-events email list.

Please note that KCCLV will continue to hold its virtual meetings on Zoom. The business meeting is on the first Wednesday of the month and the discussion group is on the third Wednesday of the month, both at 8:00 PM.

For more information about low vision and how you can connect with us, call (502) 895-4598 or email us at kcb@kentucky-acb.org.
