KCB past president and current Board member Jim Shaw was the recipient of the prestigious Langan Award for 2009 at the Kentucky School for the Blind Founder's Day ceremony on May 8.
The Langan Award is presented to an individual who has given outstanding service to the school and the blind community. Jim helped countless people in his 32 years at the Social Security Administration. Jim is a Lion, a long-time member of the KCB Board, and is active in the KSB Alumni and in his church. Most importantly, he is a friend to everyone he meets.
The Founder's Day program at the Kentucky School for the Blind celebrated KSB's 167th birthday. A human timeline took the audience on a journey from Samuel Gridley Howe's visit to the Kentucky legislature and the beginnings of the school in the 1840's to the future of KSB. On the way were many past superintendents of the school and 19th president of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. Many symbols of KSB's history also stopped by for a visit, including the 1937 flood, the wall in front of the school, and the cupola from high atop the original school building on the campus.
Thanks to John Roberts, Principal of KSB, who created the human timeline, and to the KSB staff, students and Alumni who brought it to life.
