Why Kentucky's Blind Children Need Summer Programs at KSB

On April 7, 2009, the Kentucky Department of Education unexpectedly announced that summer enrichment and work programs were cancelled due to lack of funding. uover 100 blind and visually impaired children from across the state were affected. Parents, KSB alumni, professionals, and advocates throughout the blind community protested by writing letters and calling the Governor, the Department of Education, legislators, and members of the state Board of Education.

A town hall meeting was held on April 20 at the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville. Representatives from every major aspect of the blind community spoke about the need for these programs, and a discussion with Barbara Kibler from KDE ensued in an effort to explore possible solutions to the problem.Listen to the KSB Town Hall meeting here.

Mike Lyons - Super Advocate

William Michael (Mike) Lyons III was a blinded veteran and a life member of the Kentucky Council of the Blind. He was an advocate for people with all types of disabilities. He worked tirelessly on transportation, pedestrian safety, accessibility and legislative issues, and he served on many boards and committees throughout the state.

Mike died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the Louisville VA Hospital on Saturday, January 31, 2009, following a fall in his home and surgery for a broken hip earlier that week. Funeral arrangements were handled by Melissa Mershon, director of Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson's Department of Neighborhoods.

Metro Louisville ADA Co-ordinator Tommy Clark gave the eulogy and read a tribute to Mike from Mayor Abramson. Attendees from throughout the community, including KCB President Michael McCarty, spoke of their memories of Mike and his outstanding work for people with disabilities. KCB's Bradley Mann sang two solos, Carla Ruschival played the organ, and the service concluded with a military bugler playing "Taps".
